Genes are a way to improve normal and powercreatures. They can not be used for nethers nor for familiars.
You'll be able to generate genes by sacrificing creatures at level 20. Not every Creature you summon has a gene in it. You can check this at the bottom of the creature list: 'View your current active genes.'
When using an amulet from creatures with mnimum uselevel 35 you'll be able to choose a gene for this creature if you have one. At the start you can only choose one gene (fe health), later with the passive skills you'll be able to choose either two types of T1 genes (fe damage and health) or a T2 gene (fe health). It could be gamechanging, so pick wisely.
Genes you get will be bound to the exact creature you got them of. This means that if fe you have a +3% damage gene for a Sea Serpent, you will not have that +3% gene yet when you list your first Hydra or Atlas.

Maximum for T1 gene:
Damage: +10%
Health: +10%
Main defence: +5%
Other defences: +10%
Steal: +20%

Maximum for T2 gene:
Damage: +21%
Health: +21%
Main defence: +11%
Other defences: +21%
Steal: +42%
